Hi all,
Thought I'd best re-appear and add an account of seeing AoY last Sunday. I really didn't think I'd be able to see this show but got incredibly lucky and got a deal on a hotel room via a timeshare I own. Am having to eke out the dollars and cents while I'm here, but it's SO worth it! Just a pity I couldn't have been around in NYC at the same time as some of you other guys later this month. Would LOVED to have been part of a Curtains reunion....
Anyway, the play: As it's still in previews I think it's fair to say it's not quite the finished article. I think it needs a bit of trimming down and I personally found the scene transitions (signalled by dropping the curtains) a bit distracting and prolonged. However, DHP, Mary Catherine Garrison and Charles Kimbrough are all superb in their leading roles and I particularly loved the interaction the other two had with DHP's character.
It's very much a period piece and many of the audience at the show I saw were older theatre-goers. It made quite a change to hear giggling and tittering rather than guffaws and gales of laughter - it's a much more subtle, gentle humour than you routinely find nowadays.
As I commented to muffin, DHP is his usual charming self onstage. There's an undercurrent of passion and pathos to his role and he brings it to the fore beautifully. Plus, he gets to play the piano (albeit not very proficiently)! I'm wondering if he has it written into his contract that there must be a piano-related scene at some point...
I was a bit jet-lagged on Sunday and I managed to miss DHP at the stage door (I went to the right-hand exit when I should have been at the left-hand door, those of you going in future weeks). However, last night more than made up for it...
I didn't see the show as I had an SRO ticket for God of Carnage. I did have my AoY playbill though, and thought I'd see if I could catch DHP as his show finished later than GoC. When I got there it was pouring with rain and the security guy let the six of us waiting at the stage door to stand inside. I've never known that happen before, it was so nice of him!
I had a wonderful time chatting to the other folks there about theatre in general and DHP's roles inparticular. One couple had seen a lot of shows I'd seen both in New York and in London, so the time flew by even though DHP didn't make an appearance for quite a while (I figure that the cast were taking 'notes' on the performance as no-one else seemed to come out till quite later either). David was absolutely lovely with all six of us there, chatting and posing for pictures and making sure everyone got everything they wanted. I was chuffed to bits when he recognised me and said 'Oh Hi!' on greeting me - made my night/week/month/year! ;D
I told him that a few others would be coming to see him, specifically muffin from Edinburgh, so be sure to mention where you're from. I asked him about post-show 'talkbacks' and he said he thinks there will be some but he didn't know the exact schedule yet. Hopefully someone on here will get to go to one or someone will post a report somewhere...
All in all, a wonderful trip so far. Looking forward to meeting up with my friend Gina at the weekend and seeing the show again before I leave.
